To the best of my ability, I try to write my blog posts ahead of time. I try to have them written, scheduled and loaded to go a few weeks before they actually go live.
But, sometimes there are topics that are time sensitive that I need to jump on. Case in point, the Flappy Bird post.
Here’s how the whole thing unfolded:
On Saturday, February 8 at 2:17PM, my friend Casey Lewis saw an article about the Flappy Bird developer. He was planning to delete the app from the Apple store on Sunday, February 9. Casey thought that was something I might like to write about and sent me a direct message.
At 2:21PM I sent him a thank you for that idea.
At 2:40PM I tweeted out a link to this post that I wrote about the story.
By midnight, 70,552 people had visited this blog, which is great for a Saturday.
As of this writing, the post had been shared 70,000 times on Facebook.
Would the post have done as well if I posted it on Monday and explained why the developer had taken down the app the day before? I don’t think so. There are some stories that force you to pull the trigger quickly.
When you have a story like that, don’t wait. Get there first. What you’d gain in taking a few extra days to write the post will cost you much, much more in what you lose in momentum.
