Blogs

Someone asked me recently if I was doing a good job “kicking over the pedestal.” What he meant was that with social media it’s really easy to put ourselves on pedestals. We only show the things that make us look smart, talented or cool.

We edit our lives until we’re playing characters, not actually being ourselves.

I struggle with that, I really want you to think I’ve got it together sometimes. And by “sometimes” I mean “the times when I am awake.”

So I thought it might be good to do a little pedestal kicking.

Here’s my confession today: I don’t read blogs.

That’s a pretty weak confession on the face of it, even though I’m a blogger and should probably be reading blogs, but let me tell you why that confession is so whack. (My second confession is that I couldn’t figure out how to turn that stupid shadow effect off the words in the image I posted.)

I don’t read blogs, not because I don’t like blogs. I don’t read blogs because I get really jealous.

Most times, when I visit a friend’s blog, all I see is all the smart things they are doing with theirs and all the things I am not doing with mine.

I see well organized categories. I see content for days and days. I see affiliate programs and membership sites and a whole host of things they are doing that I am failing to do.

I feel like a massive failure. After feeling that way for years, I essentially just quit reading blogs. That’s why I am so slow to make improvements. In addition to being afraid of change I literally don’t know what other bloggers are doing because I’m too afraid to look.

Is that dumb? It is. I’ve written books that begged you (and me) to not compare yourself to other people. I know all of this is dumb, but no one ever said fear was smart. No one ever said shame, inadequacy and narcissism played fair. That’s what it’s really about because I’m acting like every blog on the planet is a commentary on my own blog and own life. If that’s not narcissism, I don’t know what is.

I basically am saying, “I don’t read any blogs because of what the commentary they offer on my life.” Are you kidding me? There are millions and millions of blogs online. Who knew they were all about me? I knew.

So there it is.

Pedestal kicked.

I’m a recovering narcissist terrified of blogs. I am essentially Caillou with better hair.

That said, what blog would you recommend I read?

I’m going to start reading blogs and need your suggestions?

What blog do you love reading?
